“Is there going to be more risk in the contract market this year?”

I think so.

Whilst there is always some risk in the contract market, the current climate does feel a little riskier. There is a lot of uncertainty right now.

I’ve seen some companies putting hiring freezes in place, and others looking to reduce contractor numbers as a cost-saving exercise.

Don’t panic. As a contractor, it’s par for the course.

Here is my advice.

✅ Build up 4-5 weeks of cash flow so that you don’t have to stress if a contract gets cut short
✅ Start looking for a new contract at least 4 weeks earlier than your end date.
✅ Network, Network, Network. The best contractors tend to land work through their network. Make the most of it.
✅ Stay open-minded as to the types of roles you might consider taking.

Trust me – it will all be OK! We have gone through uncertain times before and contractors have always survived.
