“Just flick over a couple of CVs when you have a minute”.

I used to hear this all the time a few years ago. And to this day I still hear this line. And in all fairness, sometimes we would have candidates we could just “flick” over to a client’s inbox (with their permission, of course).

But right now unemployment rate is at a 48 year low. There is no such thing as “send me some people” and “flick over a CV”. This is because:

– Every role right now requires headhunting
– Headhunting is a time-intensive exercise – candidates don’t fall in our laps
– Candidate needs have changed – your culture, projects and leadership is very important to most candidates
– Candidates aren’t a CV to flick over to you – they are people with career aspirations. I book in a meeting to discuss their candidature with my clients to bring the CV to life

I know you’re time poor. I get it. And I wish I could wave a magic wand and make your hiring process that fast. But taking the time now to meet with a recruitment partner, let them understand your culture, leadership style, tech landscape and exactly what you need for your team will save you a lot of time and money in the long run.

The tables will turn again eventually, but the market has been like this for well over a year now, and it’s time to take your hiring strategy seriously.
