Leadership

How do you cope when given honest feedback from a colleague that may not be completely positive?

I get triggered!

Every quarter we ask the team at Precision Sourcing to complete a simple anonymous questionnaire that asks them for open and honest feedback on the business and the leadership team.  As a leadership team we sit down and then walk through the responses.

Every quarter I go through the same process:

  • I get triggered by focusing on the 1% to 5% of negative feedback
  • I go for a walk, call my wife, and have a proper moan about how ungrateful some people are
  • I calm down, read the 95% to 99% of positive feedback and start to feel more positive – alongside some counselling from others in the leadership team who are less emotive than me
  • I take on board the negative feedback and look to make the necessary changes in the business to rectify the negative feedback

By following this process of asking for feedback we have been able to make significant changes in the business that have had a hugely positive impact on our culture and performance.

I was fortunate enough to be able to ask the Australian Cricket Coach Justin Langer how he copes with negative feedback and he had an interesting response.

I hope you enjoy it.
