After working as a Recruiter in the Software Development market for 2.5 years it suddenly hit me that if I was honest with myself, I didn’t really understand what is going on behind the scenes when the people that I place are sitting at their desk’s coding away. If someone was to ask me to start to explain what went into creating a web page I wouldn’t even have a clue where to start or what was involved. Should a software recruiter know how to code?

So I thought it was about time to take on a new challenge and take my first steps into learning to code, with the aim to increase my knowledge, my ability to have better conversations and my ability to match the right people to the right roles ultimately improving the value that I can provide as a recruiter.

Admittedly I had to lean on the people around me to get this off the ground as I didn’t know where I should start in my attempt to tackle the mountain of learning code. Luckily Alvin Tolentino said that he would be willing to take on the challenge of mentoring me into this and gave me a nudge in the right direction with reading materials and courses. So I signed myself up hoping to start to grab the basics.

I’m now a few weeks into a basic web developer course and have started to get myself acquainted with the basics of HTML. I’ve learned how to add images, videos, links etc to a web page which has kept me entertained! Below is an image of the coding that I’ve completed so far in as I thought that the dev community/connections that I’ve built up over the last 2.5 years might have a laugh at my simplicity.

My aim of sharing this is to:

A. Encourage me to keep developing as I’ll be pressured to write the next chapter

B. Allow me to gain insight and feedback that will hopefully push me not only as a Developer but as a recruiter as well.

I already feel like I’m hooked and I believe that the next stop for me is CSS, so I guess that I’ll be checking in a couple of weeks down the line to report back on how I get on there!
